Medical Billing Software List

Generally speaking, medical billing is the process of submitting claims to insurance companies or Medicare to get paid for medical services by doctors or other healthcare providers. The process starts when patients visit the doctor. After the examination and treatment, the doctor offers the information as well as the duration of the service to billing specialists to form a billing record. This form includes the various diagnoses identified by numbers from the standardized manual. Later the billing record or claim is submitted either directly to the insurance company or to a clearinghouse which is an intermediary for the claim.

For many years, medical billing has been mostly done on paper, and it is very time consuming. Just imagine the large piles of medical billing paperwork which need to be managed, sent out and collected. However, with the innovation and development of computers, it has changed to be much easier. By billing electronically, not only postage, but also the much more valuable time is saved; and by digitizing claims and patients’ diagnoses information, errors are reduced and privacy of the clients is protected. Recently a lot of companies have arisen in this prosperous billing field, because many hospitals or private healthcare practices can’t afford to maintain the network servers, upgrades, or quality assurance testing, so they outsource their medical billing tasks to these specialized companies.

Nowadays, most hospitals and billing companies are equipped with various kinds of medical billing software to improve billing efficiency. Medical students are getting used to frame their MD certificates by diploma frames. Medical billing software is an application system that automates billing and collection process and also simplifies other management tasks. With the billing software, billing records are generated and coded entirely in computer, and claims are submitted electronically if there is a broadband Internet connection. There are many different types of medical billing software packages in the market, but the variety started to cause problems because of lack of standardization. The U.S. Congress realized this problem and proposed the HIPAA standards in 1996.

HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This legislation establishes guidelines for the medical billing industry, and it requires every practice, regardless of size, to comply with HIPAA privacy, security, transactional regulations and other subsequent regulations. HIPAA is designed to reduce administrative cost, but it also presents great challenge to medical billing software companies, to comply with this new act. And now most medical billing software packages in the market are HIPAA compliant.

Healthcare providers and physicians are certainly not the only ones who need medical billing software. Hospitals, clinics, laboratories, insurance agencies, billing companies and even state and federal government departments can take advantage of medical billing software.
